ABC Upfronts: Cupid Out, Ugly Betty Lives

While he doesn’t draw nearly the same amount of media scrutiny as Vulture hero Ben Silverman, there’s no denying that ABC Entertainment president Steve McPherson could certainly use some hits on his 2009–2010 schedule to give him a boost in the job-security department. While ABC is home to some of the most successful dramas on television (think Lost, Grey’s Anatomy, and Desperate Housewives), his network has had to suffer through more than its fair share of high-profile face-plants (think Cashmere Mafia, Dirty Sexy Money, and Life on Mars) over the last few years. And while troublesome blogs (like us!) took a lot of the wind out of the ABC’s sales by previously reporting that shows like Flash-Forward and the Elizabeth Mitchell–starring V have already gotten the network green light, there were a few noteworthy announcements delivered by McPherson this morning.

News broke yesterday that ABC had already decided to cancel Samantha Who?, but it wasn’t until this morning that we officially learned ABC won’t be renewing either The Unusuals or Cupid. We’re a little bit bummed about the latter, mainly because we’re suckers for Sarah Paulson, but the news doesn’t come as much of a surprise; back when the show launched in March, the tension between the show’s creator, Rob Thomas, and ABC’s senior vice-president of current programming, Kim Rozenfeld, was (semi-) famously chronicled during a press tour for the show.
