G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra Trailer Fails to Quash Lingering Bad Buzz

Tagline: “When all else fails, we don’t.”

Translation: For the sake of Paramount’s bottom line, they had better not.

The Verdict: The last few months have been anything but a smooth ride for G.I. Joe, the feature-film franchise based on the series of popular eighties-era action figures. The studio has had to battle poor focus-group test results, bra-stuffing allegations, and bad buzz coming out of ShoWest (where it was described as being “quite a cheesy letdown”). Still, there’s a healthy sense of nostalgia for the franchise, as evidenced by the outpouring of raves for the Warren Ellis–scripted G.I. Joe: Resolute micro-series that aired on Adult Swim last week. However, the international trailer for the Stephen Sommers–directed film, which opens here in August, disappoints on a few levels: Not only is there no glimpse of Joseph Gordon-Levitt in his heavily anticipated performance as the Cobra Commander, but it sounds to us like Sienna Miller just might have decided to speak in her normal British voice instead of the exaggerated Russian accent that we’ve come to expect from the Baroness. Oh, the horror!
