Letterman Has a Hugh Grant Moment

Good morning! In case you missed it, on last night’s Letterman, following a monologue that included a joke about Mark Sanford “hiking the Appalachian trail,” Dave shared a “little story”: On a morning three weeks ago, he found a package in his car containing evidence of his affairs with female Late Show underlings, along with a letter threatening to turn the allegations into a screenplay (?) unless Letterman forked over $2 million. To nervous laughter from his studio audience, Dave admitted to all of the “terrible things” of which he was accused and cracked a few jokes (“Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Yes it would, especially for the women”). The blackmailer — whom Dave says was arrested in a sting yesterday after he actually tried to cash a check for $2 million, hilariously — has since been named as Robert J. Halderman, a producer on CBS’s 48 Hours. Surely we’ll be hearing more about this today, but Dave’s ten-minute confession made for some pretty raw, compelling television. Click to watch.
