So could Up in the Air have fared better than zero for six at Sunday’s Oscars if it had included a scene in which George Clooney walks sadly through an airport in a spacesuit, to the strains of Ricky Nelson’s “Lonesome Town”? Jason Reitman will never know! But to promote the movie’s release on DVD today, Paramount has released exactly such a clip, which Reitman presumably cut because he thought Ryan Bingham’s solitude was sufficiently underlined by everything else that happened in the movie, without the need for astronaut metaphors. Still, it’s impossible not to wonder if Best Visual Effects might have played out differently …
