out on the weekend

This Weekend in Rock Photos, From George Clinton to Ted Leo

Yesterday, Thurston Moore conducted a lecture titled “A Dissertation on White Noise” at the art gallery Partners & Spade. This sounds like a very Thurston Moore thing of Thurston Moore to do. Notable, though, is that the lecture was geared specifically toward 8- to 12-year-olds and was part of a series called Avant Garde Preschool. Which is to say that, if you click through, you can see a pretty hilarious picture of a bunch of kids holding fingers in their ears while Moore makes weird noises on his guitar in the name of education. Also documented from this weekend in rock: shows from Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Pissed Jeans, George Clinton and the P-Funk All Stars, tUnE-YarDs, Ted Leo, Xiu Xiu, Janelle Monáe, and Florence and the Machine.

Rebecca Milzoff reports: “Whether strutting on tables, belting like an opera star, or engaging in robot ballet moves, Janelle Monáe transformed Joe’s Pub into her own bizarre, funkified world for an impossibly high-energy hour. Monáe and her band entered in hooded cloaks, but de-robed for hip-shakers like “Tightrope,” “Cold War,” and “Faster,” during which a Mummenschanz-esque figure ran through the audience to encourage dancing. We didn’t need permission — we were booty-shaking the minute Monße, like a hyperactive wind-up doll beamed in from Motown, started to sing.”
