Dearth of ‘Great’ Ideas to Blame for Lack of Mr. and Mrs. Smith Sequel

Considering its box-office success and significance in pop-culture history (where Brangelina originated!), it’s somewhat surprising there has been no movement on a sequel to 2005’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Well, it seems what’s been holding them back, according to Angelina Jolie’s surprisingly frank Vanity Fair interview, is an understanding that most sequels are totally superfluous.

“We did ask somebody to look into Mr. & Mrs. to see if they could crack a sequel, but there wasn’t anything original,” she said. “It was just, ‘Well, they’re going to get married, or they’ve got kids, or they get separated.’ Never great.”

But don’t break out the handkerchiefs yet. There is still hope for a pairing of the golden couple on the silver screen.

“I’d love to [film a movie with Pitt],” she said “We’ve talked about it. We’d have to figure out who’s going to watch the kids, but it’s really about finding the right thing, because we’ve looked … When you’re a couple, there are certain things people don’t want to see you do. It becomes too indulgent, too personal. I don’t think people want to see people who are really together intimate onscreen.”

And while her last point is understandable, especially in this post-Gigli world, one might think she’d be aware that Brad and Angelina are perhaps the only exception to that rule.
