Reports yesterday that the Van Gogh painting stolen from a Cairo museum was recovered were just wishful thinking, or based on inaccurate information, and the investigation is ongoing, Egypt’s culture minister Farouk Hosni said today. What’s more, the details of the painting’s first theft, in 1978, have never been fully revealed, and it was never reported whether the thieves, who had allegedly informed police where in Kuwait the painting was hidden after their arrest in 1980, were never reported charged or tried. Thus, some in the art world have wondered if the $50 million painting stolen on Saturday was forged, anyway. But keep an eye out! [CNN, Guardian UK]
