Sofia Coppola Wins the Golden Lion at Venice

Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere was just awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, by a unanimous decision of a jury headed by Quentin Tarantino. The reportedly subtle film stars Stephen Dorff as a hard-partying actor visited by his daughter, and most early critics liked it. “Thanks to my Dad for teaching me,” Coppola said, upon receiving the award, referring of course to Francis Ford Coppola. Meanwhile, Vincent Gallo won the best actor prize at the festival for his performance in Essential Killing, in which he plays a suspected Taliban fighter, even though he does not speak throughout the film.
