Angelina Jolie planned to shoot parts of her directorial and screenwriting debut, a love story set during the Bosnian war, in Bosnia: Not anymore! Bosnia’s culture minster has revoked Jolie’s shooting permits after complaints from a war victim’s group about the movie’s central conceit: a Muslim heroine falling in love with the Serbian who raped her. As one of the protesters explained, “This is misleading history. Among thousands of testimonies by women raped during the war, there is not a single one that tells of a love story between a victim and her rapist.” Jolie should know this kind of icky, twisted romanticism is best left to soap operas.
