Well, Secretariat opens this week, and everybody’s talking about Diane Lane’s performance. Which is great, but a little part of us dies whenever a movie named after a horse opens and nobody talks about the horses’ acting. Film history is full of great, brave performances by horses. And it’s perhaps ironic that previous generations did a somewhat better job of recognizing the contributions of equine performers: “Wonder horses” like Trigger and Rex and Fritz and many others actually sometimes even starred in their own movies.
