2008’s Taken — in which Liam Neeson plays an ex-CIA agent mad dad destroying shit throughout the Parisian-based Algerian mafia to find his kidnapped daughter — was a surprise box-office hit, pulling in over $220 million worldwide. So why not do it again? In Unknown, things are a little bit more complicated for our hero: Neeson wakes up in a hospital after a car crash to find that his wife (January Jones) doesn’t recognize him, and his identity, as some presumably high-powered doctor, has been stolen by Aidan Quinn. So this time he’s in Berlin and beating everyone up for his own sake and not that of his daughter, and he’s a medical professional, meaning there’s no good reason (at least in the trailer) for why he’s skilled at hand-to-hand combat, plus Diane Kruger shows up as the world’s most attractive cab driver. But the end result is the same: Liam Neeson, one man wreckin’ crew. Awesome.
