Beats Rhymes & Fights Trailer: The History of A Tribe Called Quest, As Told by Michael Rapaport

Particularly dedicated A Tribe Called Quest fans may know that accomplished supporting actor/NBA All-Star celebrity-game veteran Michael Rapaport has been talking up his documentary on the group for a while now, so it’s nice to finally see a glimpse of the finished product. The first trailer packs in all the trademarks of the genre: nostalgia-inducing archival footage, breathless testimonials from industry cognoscenti, and lots and lots of dramatic band in-fighting, some of it surrounding Phife Dawg’s medical issues. (For the record: In the trailer, it sounds like Rapaport is saying the movie is called Beats Rhymes & Fights, but IMDb has it as Beats Rhymes & Life, a.k.a. the exact name of the fourth ATCQ album and the superior movie title). A lot of the footage seems to have been grabbed during the band’s latter-day on-and-off reunion run, with backstage drama at Rock the Bells and elsewhere, and while it would have been nice to see more behind-the-scenes stuff from the early days, maybe Rapaport’s keeping it all locked up for the actual movie. Regardless, this is shaping up to to be even better than The War at Home. Update: A representative for the movie has gotten in touch with Vulture to let us know that the trailer that was previously embedded in this post is not the authorized trailer, so we took it down.
