CBS has been fast and loose with the pilot pickups lately. Not all of them will make it, but the network’s latest green-lit pilot, Rookies, an ensemble cop drama, has Lush Life and The Wire writer Richard Price onboard, and Robert De Niro executive producing. The show still treads familiar territory: Six NYPD rookies balance their personal lives with learning the beat on the mean streets of Manhattan. Rookies joins a roster of other New York–based cop dramas like Blue Bloods and CSI: NY, and that’s only on CBS. Ultimately, good writing will separate the full-season dramas from the mid-season cancellations. Or … something will. [Deadline]
