Maybe there actually is an Oscar race. For the last few months, a dwindling number of pundits has insisted that The King’s Speech has the conventional uplift required to pull out the big Best Picture win at the Academy Awards, but meanwhile, The Social Network managed to steal every guild nod and critics’ group hosanna in sight. The Facebook drama’s juggernaut hit a speed bump yesterday night, though, as the Producers’ Guild of America awarded The King’s Speech its top prize, building on the mild momentum conferred by Speech nabbing the highest number of BAFTA nominations last week. The upcoming Screen Actors Guild prize for Best Ensemble could go to either film (or, as many are predicting, The Fighter), so perhaps things aren’t as sewn up as we thought?
