The Comedy Awards to Finally Give Comedians Their Much-Deserved Meaningless Trophies

Awards shows! Can we ever have too many of them? Hell, if I had my druthers there’d be an entire cable network dedicated to 24 hours a day of celebrity self-congratulation. I mean, these people are heroes. How else can they be validated? I mean, besides the fame and the money, of course.

Nominees will be selected by a board of directors, including James Burrows, Billy Crystal, Will Ferrell, Whoopi Goldberg, Brad Grey, Seth MacFarlane, Adam McKay, Jimmy Miller, Jay Roach, Ray Romano, Rory Rosegarten and Phil Rosenthal, and winners will be voted on by members of the comedy community.

And now comedians will no longer be left out in the cold by award shows like the Oscars and the Country Music Awards. Comedy Central and MTV Networks are planning the first annual Comedy Awards, an awards show that’s being simulcast on a whole slew of cable networks as to make it impossible for you to avoid watching. Taping on March 26th at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom, it’ll then air on Sunday, April 10 simultaneously on Comedy Central, Spike, TV Land, VH1 and Nick at Night. Here’s how the nominees and winners will be selected:OK, I will give them props for having a pretty legit set of judges and for not allowing the internet/texters to have a say in any of it. And hell, when the Golden Globes are calling The Tourist a comedy, it’s pretty clear that actual comedies will never get a fair shake. At the very least, this should be more entertaining than most award shows, even if that’s not exactly a high bar to set. It’ll be interesting to see who they pick as host and what the categories are. Hopefully they’ll be more specific than “funniest,” as otherwise it’d be a pretty short show.
