Television writer Stephen Falk recently happened upon the original casting breakdown for Modern Family, a revealing look into who executives hoped to land for the show (or at least, what sort of “type” they were searching for). In addition to the idea of Craig T. Nelson as Jay — whom the network almost cast before turning to Ed O’Neill — there are a lot of fun what-ifs, including Lisa Kudrow as Claire or Andy Richter and Arrested Development’s Tony Hale as gay couple Mitchell and Cameron.
