In Treatment Is Canceled [Update]

Dr. Paul Weston has stopped practicing: HBO announced today that it is canceling the Gabriel Byrne drama In Treatment after three seasons. Though it was a ratings underperformer for the network, the series did serve as an excellent talent showcase that launched young actors like Mia Wasikowska and Dane DeHaan while providing veteran performers like Irrfan Khan, Debra Winger, and Blair Underwood with meaty monologues week after week. UPDATE: HBO clarifies that the show is only definitively canceled in its current format, in which Gabriel Byrne’s shrink sees a different patient every day of the week. So there’s still the possibility of a fourth season, but if it happens, it likely won’t include daily installments of the series, or the same number of patients per season. [EW]
