Paul Reiser Visits Leno to Promote/Mourn His New/Canceled Show

Everyone needs to stand-up at their desk/card table in their parents’ basement right now and given a round of applause for Paul Reiser’s Leno interview. According to Leno’s tentative banter, it seems that Reiser agreed to come on the show last Thursday…only to have The Paul Reiser Show canceled Friday. “NBC, to my knowledge, they don’t traditionally make bad decisions,” Reiser cracked, before essentially claiming NBC talked him into putting up the show sans promotion and against American Idol. Basically executives could have thrown the show in a ditch, sprinkled it with lye and still walked away with the same dismal ratings.

Instead of hiding from the world and leaving long, boozy voice mails for Helen Hunt, however, Reiser is wearing his bitterness as a badge of honor. When discussing NBC’s programming decisions, he explains, “When you are the last place network, you don’t want to jeopardize that. You found your niche. Stay there!” Reiser still took the opportunity to hype his new book Couplehood, explaining “The greatest thing about this, they can can’t cancel a book.” I hope he understands it was all totally worth it, if just for this interview.
