It’s a good day for celebrities making morally offensive statements and then apologizing for them! First Tracy Morgan, now Russell Crowe: The beefy Australian sent out a series of tweets protesting circumcision, gloriously topped off with “many jewish friends, I love my Jewish friends, I love the apples and the honey and the funny little hats but stop cutting yr babies @eliroth.” He mentioned Eli Roth because they’re pals (Roth is producing RZA’s kung fu movie, The Man With the Iron Fist, in which Crowe is appearing), and Roth quickly sprang to his defense: “@russellcrowe is a great person — people are taking a joke to ME on twitter and are using it as an excuse to villify a good man.” For the record, it doesn’t seem like anyone is saying that Crowe’s actual opinions on circumcision were a joke, just the brusque way he presented them. Later, Crowe added: “My personal beliefs aside I realize that some will interpret this debate as me mocking the rituals and traditions of others. I am very sorry.” Let us end this on a moment of conciliation: apples with honey, soooo good, right? [HR, Movieline]
