Vera Farmiga’s directorial debut, Higher Ground, features crises of faith, seventies-era beardos, and a rousing rendition of “How Great Thou Art.” Farmiga stars as Corinne, a woman whose marriage and faith are falling apart at the same time; Humpday’s Joshua Leonard plays her husband, and Farmiga’s sister Taissa plays young Corinne. Bill Irwin and Tom Hawkes round out the Sundance-certified cast, but the really interesting thing about the trailer is just how effusive the promotional quotes are. They’re astonishingly effusive!
