Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides underperformed significantly in the U.S., and with its gross of $231 million, it was the lowest earner in the series to date. No matter! Overseas, audiences have gone completely bonkers for it, and as the NYT points out, it’s about to cross the billion-dollar mark, becoming the eighth biggest movie of all time (just behind The Dark Knight) and by far the highest-grossing Pirates movie ever overseas. Even crazier? The all-time worldwide top ten now includes four Johnny Depp movies: the three sequels to the first Pirates movie, and last year’s Alice in Wonderland. They love him in Uruguay!
