weekend box office

Transformers Soars, Larry Crowne Fizzles

Predictably, Transformers: Dark of the Moon took first place at the box office this weekend, by quite a bit. The Michael Bay movie made a cool $97.4 million during its debut weekend — a weekend that isn’t even over yet. In any case, it still fell short of its predecessor’s early earning: Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen made nearly $109 million in three days when it debuted in 2009. (However, Dark of the Moon earned $372 million worldwide.) In second place, Cars 2 made $25 million, bumping its total earnings to $116 million. Moving along. In third place, Bad Teacher earned $14.1 million, bumping its total earnings to $59.5 million. In fourth place, even with Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts, Larry Crowne could only bring in $13 million during its debut weekend. And in fifth, Monte Carlo, the Leighton Meester–Selena Gomez movie, made just $7.6 million. [Box Office Mojo via Movieline]
