Reports of “passive segregation lite” — not to mention basic racism — were not enough to keep people from The Help this weekend, either because they wanted to judge for themselves, or because the other options were just really unappealing. The movie made $20.5 million, besting last week’s winner, Rise of the Planet of the Apes which took in $16.3 million. However, the three-week-old Apes still managed to take down everything else, including Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D ($12 million), One Day ($5.3 million), Fright Night ($8.3 million), and Conan the Barbarian ($10 million). In addition to their eighties roots, the latter two also shared disappointing opening-night numbers. [Company Town/LAT]
