If there’s anyone whose relationship with MTV’s Video Music Awards is long-standing and complicated enough to warrant a special tribute, it’s Britney Spears’s. The show has staged almost every up-and-down of her rollercoaster career — from the 2001 premiere performance of “Slave 4 U” to the humiliating 2007 comeback performance — and fittingly, next month’s awards show will include a tribute to Spears.
