Bernadette Peters and Nick Jonas will both guest-star on the mid-season Broadway drama Smash, and while “both actors will sing,” NBC assures us, neither will play themselves. Smash is set during the early phases of staging a Marilyn Monroe musical, with two would-be Norma Jeans vying for the lead role: Ivy (Megan Hilty) and Karen (Katharine McPhee). Jonas will play an all-grown-up child actor, and Peters will play Ivy’s pushy stage mother “who was once a theater sensation.” So that means that Smash exists in a Broadway universe that does not include actual Bernadette Peters. That’s like making a doctor show set in a world where Jonas Salk is just someone’s pushy dad.
