James Cameron Tells the Story Behind the Titanic Score

James Horner, the composer responsible for the Titanic, Aliens, and Avatar soundtracks, was honored at Frankfurt’s eDIT Filmmakers Festival over the weekend. In a video message played at the awards ceremony, director James Cameron recalled the beginnings of their most famous collaboration: “In Titanic, I challenged you to do an emotionally powerful score without violinists, and with the use of haunting vocals and bittersweet Celtic pipes.” As we all know, Horner did just that, and earned himself two Oscars. (He also, in Cameron’s words, “reinvented the romantic score.”) See? Sometimes, if you follow James Cameron’s orders exactly, you win an Academy Award. Sometimes. [THR]
