NBC Buys Roseanne Barr’s New Multi-Camera Sitcom

Roseanne Barr.

NBC’s continuing its sitcom mad grab: Dane Cook, Sarah Silverman, Snoop Dogg, and now Roseanne Barr. The network bought Barr’s script for Downwardly Mobile, a multi-camera comedy set in a “mobile home community,” according to the Hollywood Reporter, with former Roseanne writer and executive producer Eric Gilliland (That ‘70s Show) serving as co-creator, writer, and showrunner. Barr’s recent foray into reality programming, Roseanne’s Nuts, was strange and disappointing, but Roseanne itself holds up astonishingly well — if Downwardly can tap into any of that show’s strengths (recognizable characters, honest emotions, people who care about each other but aren’t saccharine, perfect comic timing), it could work. If it has any of the behind-the-scenes problems, though, probably not. [THR]
