Kreayshawn’s ‘Gucci Gucci’ Ghostwriter Shares His Sad Tale

Speak, a 25-year-old aspiring rapper from California, helped Kreayshawn write the very viral hit “Gucci Gucci” (along with her second single, “Rich Whores,” and several other as-yet-unreleased tracks), but has not received any fame or financial remuneration for his efforts. How is that possible, when “Gucci Gucci” landed Kreayshawn a reported $1 million record deal? “That’s the weird thing,” he tells L.A. Weekly, “seeing someone become rich overnight and getting to do all the cool things that come with being a successful artist, knowing you had a part in that, but eating Spam for dinner.” Speak doesn’t seem to hold it against Kreayshawn — aside from a quick anecdote about her first days in the studio, he’s pretty respectful to his now-famous writing partner. But the pain is still real. “When I put out my album, will the world care? Probably fucking not. That’s humbling. It’s depressing to have the world sing along to your every fucking word, and not care about you.” Rough. [West Coast Sound/LA Weekly]
