The official trailer for Madonna’s controversial W.E. has arrived, and it suggests Julie & Julia with better fashion and a lurching camera. In one of the movie’s two timelines, we’ve got Andrea Risenborough as Wallis Simpson and James D’Arcy as King Edward VIII, whose romance scandalized the world after Edward abdicated the throne in 1936 to be with Wallis. In the movie’s other story, set in 1998, Abbie Cornish is an unhappy Manhattan housewife who plunges herself into Wallis’s old letters (and in so doing, coaxes Oscar Isaac’s hunky Russian security guard to plunge into her). Reads Cornish from that correspondence, “You have no idea how hard it is to live out the greatest romance of the century.” But Madonna does: After all, she’s dated Vanilla Ice and Dennis Rodman.
