Jason Reitman is following up his staged reading of The Breakfast Club at LACMA with a similar event for The Apartment. Way to shift gears, Jason Reitman! While a performance of Breakfast can rely on the movie’s enduring pop presence, The Apartment is a little less familiar, and even though it’s a Billy Wilder comedy, the film has aged into more of a tale of displacement and corporate dehumanization. LACMA and Reitman haven’t announced the cast yet, but given the film’s connections to Mad Men — Matt Weiner cites it as an influence, and the first season episode “Long Weekend” has a whole subplot about the movie — it’d be a shame not to see at least one member of Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce onstage.
