In a continuation of the bumper box office results we’ve come to expect in the New Year, this weekend’s gross was 33 percent higher than last year’s. Fox’s Chronicle, about why teenagers with superpowers is generally not a good idea (e.g., Misfits), came in first with $22 million in ticket sales, barely eking past Daniel Radcliffe’s thriller, The Woman in Black. Last week’s leader, The Grey, however, didn’t even break the $10 million mark. In fourth place was the weekend’s other opener, the Drew Barrymore and Nicholas Cage “pre-digested” save-the-whales pic, which underperformed expectations, raking in just $8.1 million. Another five or so films were clustered around $5 million, everything from The Descendants to One for the Money. [Deadline]
