It hasn’t been an easy road for director Richard Kelly since his breakout cult success with Donnie Darko: Follow-ups Southland Tales and The Box both fizzled, and Kelly seemed to resign himself to becoming a pawn of the studio system. Still, he’ll get to stay indie for a little while longer, as Variety reports that Robert Rodriguez is coming onboard to finance Kelly’s next film, Corpus Christi, which will be led by Carlos star Edgar Ramirez. Like Southland Tales, the movie will be set in the near-future and follow a traumatized Iraq War veteran … so no, this isn’t an adaptation of Terrence McNally’s famously controversial “gay Jesus” play by the same name. (Though we’d definitely watch if Kelly directed that, just for the sheer cognitive dissonance.)
