Fox’s Late-Night Animation Block: Axe Cop, Four 15-Minute Shows, and 50 Short-Form Shows

Former Adult Swim VP of Program Development Nick Weidenfeld is working on a new late-night animation block for Fox’s Saturday nights, and the whole thing is starting to take shape as the development process progresses. Here are the basics: it’s going to be on Saturday nights from 11pm-12:30am, and it’ll feature four 15-minute shows as well as “about 50 short-form shows of 1-3 minute each.”

The first 15-minute show that’s officially been picked up is Axe Cop, which is based on a downright delightful comic that’s written by a five-year-old and drawn by his 29-year-old brother. It is as adorably absurd as it sounds and if you haven’t seen it you should probably go check it out right this instant. The show’s been picked up for a six-episode run, and I really hope that five-year-old kid gets to be showrunner.

If the block is successful, the plan is to introduce longer, 30-minute shows in the second year. It all sounds very…Adult Swimmy. Which makes sense! It’ll also be one of the first major network comedic competitors to SNL in a while, so it’ll be interesting to see how that plays out. Look for the block to premiere early next year.
