Today, Patti Smith released “April Fool,” the first iTunes single off Banga, her eleventh studio album and first original compilation since 2004. It has an “exploratory spirit,” she explained in a statement to Rolling Stone magazine, and includes, along with a birthday ballad for Smith’s longtime friend Johnny Depp:

  • ’Amerigo’: a “melodic overture” imagining Amerigo Vespucci’s 1497 voyage to the New World
  • ’Fuji-san’: a “rock song for the people of Japan” still recovering from last year’s earthquake and nuclear disaster
  • ’This Is the Girl’: a “classic ballad in memory of Amy Winehouse”

Banga is due out on June 5.
