The Avengers raked in over $200 million from North American box offices this weekend — after first day sales of $80.5 million. That’s a new record for the biggest opening weekend sales, besting the numbers set by last summer’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 and recouping the film’s reported production costs, just like that. Reportedly, demand for the movie was so extreme that many Imax theaters ran out of seats.
