“I’m taunting them,” James Franco says matter-of-factly (around the fifty-second mark) in the trailer for The Letter, the latest effort from his NYU pal Jay Anania. The quote is delivered as Tyrone, the mysterious young actor who shows up to torment Winona Ryder in a Ruby Sparks–meets–Black Swan high-camp thriller, but it could apply as easily to Franco, who is back in full General Hospital mode — crazy eyebrows, overdramatic stares, and a moment that definitely looks like an offscreen fingerbang, Don Draper style. “Performance art” or “favor to a friend”: You decide! (And while you are at it, pour one out for poor Josh Hamilton, who only appears in this trailer long enough to get socked in the face.)
