Despite the fact that he owes us absolutely nothing this soon after dropping his hall-of-fame-great debut, Frank Ocean shared a new track on his Tumblr Monday night. While the tropical circus vibe echoes the Channel Orange bonus track “Golden Girl,” there’s a completely new element in play on “Blue Whale”: Ocean raps the whole time. You might have known, or intuited, that Ocean had rap skills, but this is easily the longest he’s taken them out for a spin. It’s good stuff (“my hometown flooded / with just a little bit of water / but my shoes still muddy / and if I ever have a daughter / I wonder what I could call her / nine months after I fuck on the beach, I guess I’d call her karma”), even if it’s dying for a lovingly crooned hook at the end.
