The Master Loses Top Venice Film Festival Prize for Being Too Popular

Paul Thomas Anderson will have to be satisfied with the Venice Film Festival’s Silver Lion directing award, along with top acting awards for Master stars Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix. While the jury had been prepared award the movie Venice’s top honor, the Golden Lion, as well, the Hollywood Reporter learned they were forced to give it Korean director Kim Ki-duk’s Pieta instead, as the Festival’s new rules say that one film cannot win two major prizes. We’re sure everyone understands.
