Ricky Gervais Says He’s Hosting ‘SNL’ Next Year

According to an entry posted on Ricky Gervais’s blog, he’s going to host Saturday Night Live sometime next year. Here’s what Gervais wrote:

“I also promised the SNL lot that I’d host next year. I’ve been invited to do it so many times but I was never available, but I’m going to do it next year whether it coincides with me plugging something or not. It might even be better if I don’t have to restrict it to jokes about the movie or TV show I’m flogging. Pure fun. You’ll be the judge of that.”

It’s pretty surprising Gervais hasn’t hosted SNL yet. He’s been a big deal in the US for years now, but like he says, he’s also been consistently busy. Gervais did appear on SNL once in a Digital Short about a Japanese version of The Office during a Steve Carell-hosted episode in 2008 (video embedded after the jump). If he does end up hosting the show next year, expect that thing to happen where Jason Sudeikis is doing his Ricky Gervais impression and the real Gervais comes out and acts like he’s mad about it while Sudeikis apologizes and acts embarrassed.
