As if the excitement surrounding yesterday’s presidential election weren’t enough, Steven Spielberg’s well-timed Lincoln, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, has attracted an amount of film buzz not seen since … well, since the last much-hyped Steven Spielberg masterpiece.
Politics in Lincoln’s day make today’s political fights seem downright polite in comparison. His actions as president — ending the Civil War, abolishing slavery, maintaining epic facial hair through it all — changed the course of the nation for generations. As David Edelstein writes in his review, Spielberg’s Lincoln puts the man within reach: “You feel as if you know what it was like to be in his presence.”
