The American Film Institute just put out the AFI Awards, its annual list of the 10 best movies and TV shows of the year, and a few comedies made the cut this time around. Unlike other awards shows, the AFI Awards have no winners or losers - it’s just a top 10 list for movies and a top 10 for TV. On the TV list, Girls, Louie, and Modern Family were the only comedies, joining a bunch of serious stuff (American Horror Story, Breaking Bad, Game Change, Game of Thrones, Homeland, Mad Men, The Walking Dead) in the 10 best list. Big-screen comedy-wise, Moonrise Kingdom and Silver Linings Playbook both won, also joined by mostly serious fare (Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Misérables, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Zero Dark Thirty). Sure, it’s a shame that great TV comedies like Parks and Recreation and Community, amongst others, were snubbed, but at least some great comedies did make this prestigious list.
