Two-time Oscar nominee Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook, Animal Kingdom) and Jack McGee (Rescue Me, The Fighter) have just been cast in a new CBS comedy pilot called The McCarthys from Happy Endings writer/Second City alum Brian Gallivan, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The McCarthys is a single-camera comedy, and if it’s picked up, it’ll be CBS’s only sitcom on the air that’s not multi-cam. The show is based on writer Gallivan’s childhood as the only gay son in a sports-crazed Irish-Catholic family living in Boston. Weaver will play the loving, no-filter mother Marjorie, while McGee will play the father Arthur, a politically incorrect high school basketball coach. Booking a recent Oscar nominee for a sitcom gig is a coup for CBS and the show, and this will be Jacki Weaver’s first regular TV job if the show is picked up. Competing with The McCarthys for a slot on CBS’s fall schedule are new shows starring Jim Gaffigan and Anna Faris, neither of whom are Oscar nominees.
