Mark Wahlberg Turned Down Star Trek Part Because He Didn’t Understand the Script

Considering his level of fame, it’s noteworthy that Mark Wahlberg has pretty much avoided the science-fiction genre entirely (Planet of the Apes aside). In a recent interview with Total Film, we learn why: He doesn’t get it. Apparently, J.J. Abrams offered Wahlberg the role of Captain Kirk’s dad (a part that eventually went to Chris Hemsworth) in his first Star Trek movie, but Wahlberg turned it down. His reasoning: “I tried to read the script, but I couldn’t understand the words or dialogue or anything, and I said, I couldn’t do this.” He eventually did see the movie and thought Abrams did a great job. It was probably for the best; otherwise, the viewer would’ve spent the entire film wondering how there were still Boston accents in the future. Say hi to your Vulcan for me.
