Ang Lee has signed on to direct the pilot of FX’s upcoming drama Tyrant, the network announced today. It’ll be Lee’s first foray into television and his first directing gig since winning an Oscar for Life of Pi. Tyrant is from Homeland’s Howard Gordon, Hatufim’s Gideon Raff, and Six Feet Under’s Craig Wright, and centers on an American family that gets caught up in a political conflict in the Middle East. The show plays into that who-I-am-on-the-inside-versus-who-I-am-on-the-outside that’s sort of Lee’s specialty, even if a political thriller seems outside his typical work.
