The zillionth annual Emmy Awards were held in Los Angeles last night, and we weeded through the three-hour ceremony to pull anything interesting related to comedy that happened. Below, please find a full list of comedy winners and nominees from the ceremony (which is available in its entirety on CBS’s website) and the clips of the best comedy moments from the event, including Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s acceptance speech with help from her bodyman Tony Hale and Will Ferrell’s closing bit.
As far as the awards winners go, there were very few surprises, which is pretty typical of the Emmys. Modern Family won for best comedy series for the fourth year in a row, Jim Parsons won his third leading actor statue for The Big Bang Theory, and Julie Louis-Dreyfus won her second consecutive for Veep, while Veep’s Tony Hale and Nurse Jackie’s Merritt Wever pulled off surprising supporting wins. One big upset occurred in the Outstanding Variety Series category, with The Colbert Report winning the category for the first time ever and ending The Daily Show’s unprecedented 10-year streak. Colbert also took home the award for writing for a variety series, which usually goes to The Daily Show (although Colbert has won twice before).

After a lackluster cold open, Neil Patrick Harris’s opening monologue was made great with the help of some of the best hosts of recent years.
Merritt Wever’s surprise win for best supporting actress in a comedy was immediately proven worthy when she gave the best speech ever.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus won her second Emmy for her role on Veep, and luckily her personal aide Gary Walsh was on hand to help out.
Tina Fey and Tracey Wigfield won for their 30 Rock finale script and made a charming duo.
The Colbert Report broke the The Daily Show’s decade-long streak for Variety Shows. In his second speech of the night, Colbert thanks Jon Stewart and gives a sweet mention to his mother, who passed away this summer.
Will Ferrell’s managed to pull out one of the best bits of the night at the very end, as he and his adorable sons presented the best comedy and drama awards to Modern Family and Breaking Bad
