Stephen Merchant’s HBO comedy Hello Ladies was bound to be awkward, but was it also bound to be this rom-com-y? It really looks rom-com-y! Maybe this trailer’s deliberately misleading in order to bait in a wide audience, and then it’ll be all-out Curb/Office-style cringe jokes, except in the dating arena. We’ll see. Merchant’s just a good guy to watch, though — good enough to get us past the tired “awkward, not archetypally good-looking man relentlessly pursues glamorous women” premise.
