Insidious: Chapter 2 Scares Up Success at Weekend Box Office

With Friday the 13th as its first day out, scary movie Insidious: Chapter 2 came out on top this weekend with $41 million in box office earnings  — the second best September opening of all time. Another newcomer, The Family, took the number-two spot with with $13.9 million, which isn’t great considering its Robert De NiroMichelle PfeifferTommy Lee Jones lineup. Last week’s frontrunner, Riddick, dropped to third place with $6.5 million. Five weeks out, Lee Daniels’ The Butler held on to fourth place, with its $5.5 million weekend loot putting it just shy of the $100 million mark. But it’s We’re the Millers, which entered a sixth week out still in the top five with $5.4 million (that’s $131.6 million cumulatively), that proves box-office longevity is not a myth.
