Having turned 30 with no job, no wife and no real idea of what his heck future holds, the very loserish lethargic but equally likable Tom Chadwick (Chris O’Dowd) decides to look way way into his past to “find himself.” This highly improvised half-hour HBO comedy follows Tom as he investigates his ancestry after he inherits a very mysterious box that belonged to his great aunt. As Tom’s passion for his genealogy grows, he uncovers a world of unusual stories, a cast of eccentric family members with serious issues and a growing sense of who he really is. Family Tree is another mockumentary baby from comedy genius Christopher Guest; the pioneer of the popular documentary-like template seen in shows like The Office and Parks and Rec. Check out the hilarious deadpan in this tenderly odd British-American cross-over comedy.
