NBC Will Broadcast the American Comedy Awards in May

NBC has acquired the American Comedy Awards, which originally aired on ABC from 1987 to 2000. The Hollywood Reporter says the network will air the special in May 2014 and will “honoring those who have achieved new heights in film and television. The ceremony will also pay tribute to some of comedy’s most enduring personalities and acknowledge the work of stand-up performers.”

Comedy award shows tend to come and go. Since ABC ceased broadcasting the American Comedy Awards, Comedy Central has attempted several times to take on the awards mantle. It took over ACA in 2001, then aired its own Commie Awards in 2003. In 2011 and 2012, The Comedy Awards were broadcast on Comedy Central and all its fellow Viacom-owned platforms.
