Comedian and Best Show on WFMU host Tom Scharpling has broken into voice acting. He’s playing a regular character on the new Cartoon Network Steven Universe, which premiered on Monday. The show follows a young boy working with a team of intergalactic female warriors to protect the universe, and Scharpling voices his dad, Greg Universe, a heavyset balding man with long hair in the back. Scharpling’s character shows up in the back half of the first episode, which you can check out here.
Scharpling previously voiced a character on an episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, but this is his first regular job on an animated show. After doing so many years of great work on the radio, it’s kind of a surprise that Scharpling and comedy partner Jon Wurster aren’t asked to do more stuff like this. Scharpling announced last week that The Best Show on WFMU is ending in December after 10 years on the air.
